Alex Shrewsberry

"As an educator for the past five years, I have created amazing relationships with many students, families and their communities through engaging opportunities within, and outside of, the classroom. Throughout this time, I have continued to fight for the human rights campaign I am most passionate about, youth mental health. While serving on national boards and giving over thirty presentations on this topic, I aim to make the resources, services, and caring adult available for every student. My passion as an educator is for my students to have a teacher that they can connect with through a variety of their interests, passions, or even adverse experiences. Through this connection, I increase the classroom and community engagement of my students so they can excel in all areas of their education. Most of all, every day I strive to be the teacher that I needed when I was a student.

I incorporate Rock Your World by connecting the content in our classroom to our current community. My students take this as an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those around them. Middle school students are naturally focused on justice, so these lessons create experiences in which they can further their knowledge on this area of interest. From daily connections to week long projects, my students enhance their 21st century skills through collaboration, problem solving, and communication with RYW. The media campaigns created by students in this project-based curriculum, develop long-term interest in the area they are passionate about. Rock Your World greatly improves student engagement as my students know they are making a difference through their education, for themselves and others."
