Overview/Purpose:
An effective mission statement clearly states the purpose and goals of an organization, plans to address goals, and beliefs that guide the work. In this lesson, students analyze effective mission statements and work on crafting one for their campaign.

Lesson Design:
- Distribute and review Mission Statement handout, modeling for the class by reading and noting the characteristics of one example.
- In partnerships, students do the same, generating a list of characteristics of mission statements.
- Class regroups to generate a shared list that the teacher charts.
Generated list should include:
1. Mission Statements are…
- short and concise – no more than four sentences
- memorable
- realistic
- easy to understand
- motivational / inspiring
- full of high-impact and precise verbs
- have a call to action
- focus on facts about an issue
- Students work independently to craft individual mission statements with the understanding that it is everyone’s responsibility to come to the table with new ideas the following day.
