Students will research to discover issues that ‘spark’ interest – that inspire them to action.
Guiding Questions:
- What human rights issues, with a focus on children’s rights, and social action advocacy, compel me to take action?
- What makes me feel compelled to take action about these issues?

Lesson Design:
- Inform students that they will be spending two to three days conducting independent research in an effort to identify their ‘sparks’ – issues that inspire them to take action.
- Distribute the Spark handout and go over it with students.
- Model how to use the handout to guide note-taking and text response on an electronic document.
- Students begin reading and researching, using the handout to guide their note-taking and text response. They should not write on the handout, but take notes in an electronic document as modeled by the teacher.
- At the end of the lesson, students print their notes and turn them in to the teacher for evaluation.
