Conversations with Creative Activists is our video podcast series, hosted by youth representatives of Rock Your Rights, that features guests who are making change through creative activism. Each discussion explores how the featured creative activist got started, how they honed their craft, the issues they're raising awareness about, and invaluable advice for young people interested in creative activism.
Island Visions | Episode 6
Jacob and Isaac Seigel-Boettner founded the independent production company Pedal Born Pictures, which stories through film for clients like National Geographic, World Bicycle Relief, Bellwether Coffee and UC Berkeley.
For the past seven years the pair have been working on a dynamic “untextbook” called
Island Visions,
which weaves together hand-drawn illustrations and maps with stories, poems and musings about the Channel Islands. The hope is that the book will inspire students of all ages with the wonder of this incredible place, California and the entire planet.
Dania Alkhouli | Episode 5
Dania Alkhouli, also known As Lady Narrator, lives in California and is a Syrian writer, poet, editor, organizer, and nonprofit manager. She is the author of two books of poetry Oceans & Flames and Contortionist Tongue.
She also co-founded
A Country Called Syria,
a non-profit organization of traveling exhibitions and events on the history, culture, and stories of Syria.
Ogechi Musa | Episode 4
Ogechi Musa
is a Nigerian-American conscious storyteller. She writes, directs, and self-produces untold stories through her platform as the CEO/Founder of R.A.W Productions. These stories delve into societal issues that feature BIPOC in lead roles. Her filmmaker mission is to evoke empathy by increasing representation in front of and behind the screen. Musa's filmmaker goal is to provide a platform for marginalized stories to educate and inspire our community to unite uplift, and celebrate the global majority, to combat global oppression.
Andy Motz | Episode 3
Andy Motz (he/him) is an award winning filmmaker. He works within narrative, documentary, and experimental formats to explore pressing issues including HIV awareness, queer identity, masculinity, and more. Andy has also created various video campaigns with different organizations like Gays Against Guns and the Downtown Women’s Center. Andy’s films have had successful film festival runs including Awareness Festival, the Paris Short Film Festival, and the Palm Spring’s Cinema Diverse LGBTQ Film Festival.
Trey Carlisle | Episode 2
Trey Carlisle is a creative activist who is passionate about advancing peace and social justice through music, dance, filmmaking, and bridge building.
A 2020 Fulbright Award recipient and graduate from Soka University, Trey has spent the past decade creating films, writing songs, teaching Hip-Hop dance styles, and facilitating workshops that build bridges between diverse communities and foster truth, reconciliation, and antiracism.
Erica Mellon | Episode 1
Erica Mellon is a filmmaker, photographer, writer, multi-media artist, and activist dedicated to using storytelling as a vehicle to positively impact social change and environmental justice.
She is currently working on a documentary project in collaboration with the Achuar people of the Ecuadorian Amazon, about the need to transform our damaging perceptions and stories in order to choose a collective story of regeneration and collaboration.
Echoing the sentiments of Creative Visions, our parent organization, Rock Your World and Rock Your Rights believe that Black lives matter. We understand that until Black lives are valued, all lives are devalued. We also uphold the importance of taking creative action in times of unrest.
