Searching for your Spark: What Inspires you to Action? The Power of Film to Inspire Action
Objectives
After this lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify human rights, with a focus on children’s rights, they will learn more about through independent research.
Overview/Purpose:
In preparation for the development of their own PSAs, students will view various film clips and identify issues they want to research further.
Guiding Questions:
- What human rights issues am I compelled to learn more about?
- Why do I feel compelled to learn about specific issues?

1. Computers with Internet access and projection
Lesson Design:
- Explain to students how film is one medium that has an incredible power to touch us, transport us, and motivate us.
- Show a pre-selected clip. Model a written response to the clip including collected information, thoughts, feelings, and questions.
- Show pre-selected clips that will expose students to a variety of issues – pausing after each clip to provide students with time to jot down some thoughts/observations about the clip, and how it impacts them.
- By the end of this lesson, students should be able to identify at least two topics they are interested in learning more about.
- Consider using the lists generated by students on the first day to find films/PSAs based on student interest.
